To the Army, he was Lieutenant Colonel Edmondson. To fellow Veterans, he was Q-Ball. To my family, he was the man who protected, taught, laughed, led, and always flew cover. To me, he was Peepaw.
The Man Behind the Rank
Who Peepaw Was
My Peepaw, Guy R. Edmondson, was born March 30, 1960, in Lubbock, Texas. Loyalty, honor, and service became the foundation of the life he built. He served his country for 28 years, but the uniform was never the whole man.
He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, leader, and friend. He loved motorcycles, the Dallas Cowboys, family stories, and a well-timed prank. His laughter could break tension, his wisdom could calm a difficult moment, and his presence made people feel protected and valued.
He did not simply tell people that they mattered. He showed it by staying close, stepping forward, teaching what he knew, and carrying responsibility when others needed someone steady.

Honor those who served, remember the fallen, and never leave a Veteran standing alone.
A Lifetime of Service
28 Years in the U.S. Army
Guy served from 1982 to 2010, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel and Infantry officer. He deployed multiple times in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
In Mosul, he advised Iraqi Brigade Commanders, mentoring leaders as they rebuilt command structures during wartime. He also served as a “camp mayor,” carrying responsibility for the welfare, safety, and stability of U.S. and coalition forces.
For him, leadership was never only command. It was stewardship.
How He Loved
He Flew Cover
When his children received deployment orders, Guy had a way of finding orders that placed him in the same part of the world. He could not remove every danger, but he could stay near enough to watch, guide, and protect.
Flying cover became more than a military phrase. It described the way he loved his family: quietly alert, fiercely loyal, and ready to move when they needed him.
That is how I remember my Peepaw. Even now, the love and lessons he gave me still feel like cover.
Distance never stopped him from being their father, and time will never stop him from being my Peepaw.
After the Uniform
Q-Ball and the Veteran Brotherhood
After retiring from the Army, Guy continued serving through the Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association, where he was known by his road name, “Q-Ball.” Riding beside fellow Veterans allowed him to honor the fallen, strengthen the bonds of service, and keep standing with his brothers and sisters in arms.
